Here is a detailed list of project activities.

REASARCH OF SEA BIRDS, OVERLAPPING WITH FISHERY AND IDENTIFICATION OF IMPORTANT FEEDING AND RESTING AREAS FOR SEA BIRDS

Research during fieldwork for the purpose of collecting data on sea birds’ colonies, colony size assessment and measuring nesting success in the project area

Design of the comprehensive GIS database for sea bird colonies

Prevalence of the sea birds at sea and spatio-temporal overlapping with fishery

  • Complete assessment of Yelkouan Shearwater, Audouin’s Gull and Scopoli’s Shearwater, and identify important feeding and resting areas for them
  • Individually track 40 Yelkouan Shearwater, 40 Scopoli’s Shearwaterand 15 Audoin’s Gulls with the help of the remote tracking equipment (data loggers, UHF radio transmitters and satellite transmitters)

THREATS ASSESSMENT FOR SEA BIRDS AT SEA AND LAND (AT NESTING SITES)

Research to assess and quantify the relevant threats for sea birds at sea

  • Track the relevant fishing fleet that operates in the project area for the estimation of the level of a bird bycatch (at least 10% of fleet)

Fieldwork research  to estimate and quantify all relevant threats on nesting sites

  • Assess the presence and the level of threats on the population of sea birds (predators, competition with other bird species, marine litter, disturbance by the visitors, bycatch with fishing gear etc.)

PROCLAMATION OF NEW MARINE SPAs IN CROATIA AND AMENDMENT OF EXISTING MANAGEMENT PLAN

Lobbying for the proclamation of new marine SPAs in Croatia

Proclamation of new marine SPAs in Croatia

  • Proclaim marine SPAs for sea birds based on collected and distributed data to the competent public institutions

Amend of the existing Management plan for Nature park Lastovsko otočje with the concrete framework for monitoring of sea bird populations.

MANAGING THREATS

IMPACT FORM FISHING ACTIVITIES

Reduce the impact of fishery on sea birds through the identification and promotion of good practice examples

SOLVING THREATS

FISHING ACTIVITY IMPACTS

Reduce the impact of the fishing activities on seabirds through identification and promotion of good practices

  • Implement mitigation methods for bycatch of seabirds during fishing activities (for at least 10% of the relevant fishing fleet)

YELLOV-LEGGED GULL

Nesting habitat enhancement for Audouin’s Gull

  • Control the population of the Yellow-legged Gull at two locations where their populations overlap with the population of the endangered Audouin’s Gull

INVASIVE MAMMALS

Implementation of the feasibility study for the eradication of invasive mammals on seabird colonies on the island Sušac in the SPA Lastovsko otočje

Implementation of the effective management of predators and/or biosecurity at all locations with seabird colonies where it is needed and feasible

  • Eradicate the population of ship rats on the remote islands in the Nature Park Lastovsko otočje/SPA Lastovsko otočje where seabirds nest
  • Control the population of ship rats on small islands situated near inhabited towns in the Nature Park Lastovkso otočje/SPA Lastovsko otočje

IMPACT OF TARGET GROPS

Mitigation of stakeholder impacts in the area with present seabird colonies through influencing their behaviour

  • Design and distribute good practice guidelines for seabirds, with the emphasis on the behaviour of tourists and visitors, shipmen and fishermen when encountering seabirds.

COMMUNICATIO AND INFORMATION DISSEMINATION

Production and implementation of the project communication plan

Communication events and events for raising awareness

  • Develop an offer for seabird watching for Nature park Lastovsko otočje/SPA Lastovsko otočje visitors.
  • Develop and install education-interpretation trail about seabirds in the Nature park Lastovsko otočje/SPA Lastovsko otočje visitors.
  • Develop and install educational programme about seabirds for children in the area of Vis, Lastovo and Korčula.
  • Develop and implement a series of public events in the area of Vis and Lastovo for the purpose of puboic raising awareness on seabirds and threats for their existence (exhibition on seabirds, Night of Albatros, sea shore and bottom cleaning events).

Networking with other LIFE projects

  • Organize visits to 1 – 2 LIFE projects that deal with similar topics for purpose of experience exchange

Project results dissemination

  • Hold a conference on seabird protection in the Mediterranean, proclamation of sea areas of the ecological network 2000 and cross-border cooperation.

MONITORING AND EFFICIENCY ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES

Monitoring of the conservation activities impact on the threats that directly impact on populations of target seabird species

  • Monitoring of the breeding success of target species
  • Monitoring of predator and competitor impacts (ship rats and Yellow-legged Gull)
  • Monitoring of impacts of the involvement of target groups
  • Monitoring of impacts of mitigation measures for bycatch

Public opinion research at the beginning and the end of the project for the impact assessment

  • Lizard community composition research (at the beginning and at the end of the project)
  • Flora composition research (at the beginning and at the end of the project)

Monitoring of the impact of socio-economic activities during the project

  • Socio-economic research

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Project management

  • Regular meetings
  • Regular internal reporting
  • Reporting to EASME
  • Establishment and operation of three project boards: Project Steering Committee (PSC), Project Management Board (PMB) and Project Scientific Board (PSB)

Monitoring and assessment of the project’s indicators After-LIFE plan design
